GuidelinesWSUD Guidelines for Knox
Knox City Council has developed a guide for Water Sensitive Urban Design within their municipality. A copy of this can be obtained from Luke Murphy at Knox City Council by phoning him on 9298 8579 or email luke.murphy@knox.vic.gov.au.
The Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) Implementation Guidelines for the City of Knox were endorsed by Council in April 2002. The Project Brief was to produce a document, contained a "toolbox" of alternative indicative design details based on WSUD principles.
Essentially, it a "how to do it" document produced for Council's engineers and developers operating in Knox. Although the background information is based on the physical environment of Knox, the principles are applicable across the board. The goal is to encourage implementation of Best Practice Environmental Management of stormwater in Knox.
The project included information sessions and workshops for Council Officers to inform them of WSUD principles, its applicability for Knox and to address pertinent issues. Staff were provided opportunity to comment on the document in its draft stages. The Guidelines have received wide recognition from local, regional, state and federal government organisations and agencies and the private sector. This is demonstrated by the project winning the Savewater Award for under the WSUD category. Additionally, the guidelines are being presented at the Johannesburg Sustainable Development conference in August and in the United States in October. They will also form a Case Study in the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI) Water Campaign.
