The costs associated with maintenance of these systems are encountered when the gravel media becomes clogged with sediments and the transport pipe can become blocked. The trench requires excavation and the filter media (gravel) must be cleaned, and reset, or replaced. The geo-textile liner may also need to be replaced at this time.

Data to the time period between resetting the bio-retention system is minimal. This information is currently being investigated by Cooperative Research Centre for Catchment Hydrology.
