Maintenance is primarily concerned with:
- Maintenance of flow to, and through, the (bio-filter) garden
- Maintaining vegetation
- Preventing undesired vegetation from dominating the garden
- Removal of accumulated sediments
- Debris removal
Sediment will accumulate within the Rain Garden over time (depending upon the nature of the catchment draining to it and daily pollutant loads). Removal is likely to be the most costly maintenance requirement of this treatment system. When ponding (without additional inflow) exceeds 24 hours duration, the permeability of the Rain Garden soil is too low and maintenance is required in the form of sediment removal to return the garden to its performance requirement. Post maintenance vegetation re-establishment is important to retain the functional conditions of the garden.
