Treatment MeasuresRain Water Tanks : Considerations
More Information
Thinking About Installing A Rainwater Tank?
Before you decide to install a rainwater tank, you should consider the following:
- Decide why you want to install a rainwater tank. Is it to save money on water bills, to help the environment or for fire fighting purposes?
- Decide what system you really need, how much water you will get, what the water will be used for, what it will cost and maintenance requirements.
- Contact your local council and health department to find out what regulations and restrictions apply in your area.
- Contact your Retail Water Company to find out regulations that may apply in your area and for information on rainwater tank suppliers.
- If you live in an area prone to bushfires, contact the nearest Country Fire Authority office for information on bushfire protection.
Considerations Required When Installing Rainwater Tanks
- You should be aware that due to the initial costs of the rainwater tank and installation costs, rainwater is more expensive than mains water in the short term.
- A first flush device should be installed to protect water quality.
- Install a backflow prevention device to protect the mains water supply.
- Ongoing maintenance and cleaning is required.
Water Yield
Four factors which principally determine the reliability of rainwater tank supplies are:
- Rainfall patterns and depths in your area.
- Roof catchment area.
- Demand for water. (ie. Number of occupants in household and what is the intended use of the collected rainwater)
- Rainwater tank capacity.
These factors need to be considered when identifying your needs for a rainwater tank.
Important Issues
- Measures to prevent access to children should be in place to reduce the risk of accidental drinking and entry into the tank.
- Cross contamination of reticulated/mains water supply is not permitted.
- Installation should be carried out by a certified plumber.
The water tank should undergo regular maintenance and cleaning (check manufacturers' guidelines).
