Treatment MeasuresRooftop Greening

More Information

Rooftops make up a significant proportion of the total impervious area of our cities. In the Melbourne CBD for example around 90% of the area consists of rooftops. Roof runoff contains organic matter such as leaf litter, depositional pollutants from the atmosphere and heavy metals (eg. Zinc) from the roof surfaces. It however is, generally of better quality than runoff from streets and roads, thus it is a potential source of water for a number of useful purposes such as toilet flushing in buildings or irrigation of garden-scapes. Rooftop greening involves the establishment of vegetation to filter roof runoff and the capture and storage of that roof runoff for reuse.
