Treatment MeasuresWetlands

Wetlands are a series of distinct cells that serve to filter and bio-remediate the stormwater. A wetland is constructed in such a way to reduce velocities of incoming waters to such an extent that sediments and pollutants that can be removed. Natural filters such as vegetation are placed in the wetland to retain pollutants, treating the waters prior to them entering a natural creek, river or the ocean. Wetlands are designed to carry out the same function in various chemical or hydrological scenarios.

Comprehensive guidelines for the design of infiltration measures can be found in Chapter 9 "Constructed Wetlands" in the WSUD Engineering Procedures available for purchase from CSIRO publishing.
